Open archives are a pillar of democracy, but efforts to maintain professional archival standards and a carefully non-partisan stance are not universally supported. Meg Phillips will provide an overview of the status of archives in the United States in 2025, with particular attention to national and state archives. How are changes in the broader culture affecting the work of archives? What happens when governments do not value evidence and truth-seeking, or that seek to control the parts of history that are taught? How are archivists approaching their difficult choices?
Meg Phillips just ended a four-year term as Vice President - Programme of the International Council on Archives (ICA) and left her role as External Affairs Liaison for the US National Archives and Records Administration in May 2025. She is currently an archivist at the University of Pennsylvania's Kislak Center for Special Collection, Rare Books and Manuscripts. She continues to follow the fates of government as well as university archives carefully.
